Prices should drop very very fast today - On my high-end guild stores they're down to 100k already - and continue to drop throughout the weekend with a rise on Monday. So sellers know someone was willing to buy at 1m, and are pricing somewhere between that and what they would actually pay for a page at like 100k. Because pages only dropped for ~6 hours, when most people were at work, there was very few pages, and sellers were able to successfully find buyers at 1m+ per page. That's recent enough that any pages that sold then are still in people's MM data. The reason prices are starting so high for this event isn't because that's the natural flow of the market, but because we actually have past sales data - from the false start in November. I expect it to start going up again in a month or so, with a second (smaller) peak in price right before the event starts again. Here's the price history for a maelstrom page. Maelstrom pages are probably the best example because of the length of the event, but you have to keep in mind Maelstrom pages were much more rare because relatively few people are able to farm them effectively, whereas anyone who is capable of interacting with other people in an MMO can farm opal pages (and it looks like they do drop from the regular boxes, just not guaranteed). People almost always buy during the event because of fear of missing out - they think that the prices will be more expensive and the items impossible to get after, so they actually drive the prices higher during the event and let them drop after. Usually for this event the prices would have started around 100k and dropped to around 20-30k from there, with a small rise on the last day, a bit of a rise after that, before slowly dwindling in price to far below the lowest during-event price, until they become so rare and enough new players decide they want them that the seller can set the price to whatever they want assuming they can find a buyer.
